Making the Most of Your Yard Sale

by J. Hamilton Fraser on May 13, 2010

Are you planning a yard sale in order to make some extra cash?  The two main motives for having a yard sale are to earn money and get rid of extra junk you have.  This is what makes it one of the best making money ideas.  Whether you are working with both of these reasons or just one motive, there are plenty of ways to get the most out of your yard sale.  This means making more money and getting rid of more junk.

In the first motive of getting rid of your junk, take your time categorizing your items.  If things aren’t easy to find, those who are looking for it won’t find it and and those who are just browsing won’t find what they could want.  Also, if something is junk and you know nobody would want it for free let alone pay for it, you probably shouldn’t put it out.  Throw away any clothes that are stained and/or completely worn.  Anything that is broken but salvageable, maybe for parts, put out for free or very cheap.

If you want to make the most money on your items, price them right.  Maximize your money making ideas.  You want to price them to what they are worth, but you also want people to buy things.  Earlier in the sale, price things high.  As it gets later and certain things aren’t being bought, lower the price.  Of course, people are going to offer less than the price you put on items.  That is a given.  You don’t have to take the offer, you can always turn it down, but think carefully before you do.  If they are offering you a price for much lower than you think it’s worth and you feel there would otherwise be a lot of demand for it, don’t take the lower price.  On the other hand, if it’s the end of the day and nobody else has so much as looked at an item, take the low price as it’s at least something.

If you don’t have a lot of things to sell and you want to make the whole sale worthwhile, ask other people if they have anything they want to sell.  If they just want to get rid of stuff, they might give it to you without expecting anything in return.  They might want a percentage of the profit, or you can each have your own sections and sell your own things.  This might give you a better chance of finding a good place to sell where there is more traffic.  The main principles to follow are to get a lot of high value items to sell and get them sold.  Do this and you’ll earn money.
