Playing with stocks – Are you playing the stock market now?

Our economy is somewhat dismal and has been for quite a few years, but there are many good stocks to invest in right now. Here are a few tips on how to play in the stock market.

1. Always apply dollar-cost averaging – what this means is to not sell your stocks when the market drops, instead you must take advantage of the dips and buy additional shares while the price is low. It is a good practice to buy low and sell high.

It takes nerves, but if you think that you do not have what it takes, then you need to understand the following solution – dollar-cost averaging. Make regular investments over time so as to be buying stocks when the price is in motion – NOT when the stock has reached its peak. This can provide great protection for times when the markets are down, click here to see how.

2. Fluff Up Your Cash Cushion – Create a cash cushion so that you may survive when times are tough. Experts recommend that you have approximately a half years worth of living expenses at your disposal (a cash cushion) and by having this cash cushion, you can keep your stocks in your portfolio where they can continue to make money for you. No cash cushion means that you would run the risk of selling them for less than what you paid for them.

3. Balance Your Trading – By finding the right balance in your trading, ie: not overly aggressive or more conservative than is necessary is a good way to achieve success and reach your financial goals. The best balance is to invest in cash and bonds (not too heavily) as well as hot stocks and sectors. Keeping your portfolio balanced can ensure safety.

4. Turn Your IRA to a Roth – By turning your IRA into a Roth IRA you can eliminate the tax that you pay on the income that it generates. For a more detailed explanation on how a Roth IRA can save you money, click here.

If you are one of the many who would want to take advantage of the profit-generating capacity of the stock market, then employing the services of a stock broker will certainly do you good. There are many investors who only have the courage to invest in the stock market for a short time and then as soon as they have generated a good sum of money, they immediately back off for fear that they might lose what they have already gained. In dealing with a broker, you must treat them as a partner and not as a slave. You have a role to play and that is to make the final call. Their responsibility is to provide you with several of the best options out there.

There seems to be no stopping the number of banks and financial institutions that offer their brokerage services online. This activity has been brought about by the seemingly stable exterior that has been displayed by the stock market in spite of the recession. While this is indeed beneficial for small scale traders and investors, the question of choosing the right online brokers still hang in the air. One of the most effective methods of finding the best among the many options out there is the process of elimination. In this way, those that does not meet the standards of the investor could be gotten rid of. Those that make the short list can then be closely scrutinized and weighed in terms of their consistency with the goals and values of the stakeholder.

You might be tempted to simply get the services of the cheapest online broker however I assure you that this is not always a great move. Instead, employ the services of someone who already has ample experience in the industry since you surely would want him or her to know how to handle most of your future concerns and problems in the stock market. Moreover, make a list of questions for the remaining few on your list. Choose the one who will be able to give you the most positive answers that are congruent with your needs as an investor.

It is important to learn about the basics of every business venture. Whether it is a small undertaking or a large one, learning the basics would help reduce the risk and provide positive results. Such is the same with stock trading. If you are a newbie investor interested to take part in the world of stock trading, here are some of the basics of the stock market for dummies.

The Stock Market for Dummies Lesson 1: What is a stock?

A stock (also known as capital stock, equity and equity security) is a representation of the amount of capital or investment that the owners put forth in order to establish their business. This is also a form of security for the creditors and investors on the business.

The Stock Market For Dummies Lesson 2: What is a share?

A stock is divided into shares at the very beginning of the establishment of the business. Each share therefore has a value based on the capital stock and on the number of shares released, which is called par value. If allowed by their region’s laws, a company can also release non-par stock or shares that have very low or no value. A share symbolizes a partial ownership of the company. So if a company releases 100 stock shares, a person who buys one share owns one percent (1%) of the company. This is one of the things you’ll learn if you use day trading software.

The Stock Market for Dummies Lesson 3: What are dividends?

When companies or businesses start earning because of their venture, they share the profit to the stockholders, which are part-owners of the company. The amount of dividends or the portion of the profit that is given to a shareholder is based on the number of shares he or she holds.

The Stock Market for Dummies Lesson 4: What is the difference between common stock and preferred stock?

Common stock – If you want to be able to hold certain company rights, such as the right to vote, then you should get common stock. The common stock is what is being referred to when discussing the highs and lows of a stock. This type of stock is also the easiest to trade because it is highly liquid.

Preferred stock – If you are more interested in earning profits via dividends, then you better get preferred stock. The preferred stock receives dividends first before other stocks. Investors usually buy preferred stocks for earnings.

To learn more about stock trading, you need to get your hands on a day trading software. There is nothing better than learning the basics first-hand.

If you are interested in saving money when you look for the best stocks to buy, here are a few tips that can help cut out costly commissions and fees.

Direct Reinvestment Plan

Setting up a direct reinvestment plan has several advantages. First, the plans are setup with the individual company which cuts out the middle man (i.e. broker) charging you the fees and commissions. Secondly, most companies will allow investors to contribute a small amount each month which is great for those of us with a small amount to invest. This is a great way to dollar cost average into a position for the long term.

Free Trades

Some online brokers offer free trades if you can meet certain terms. For example, Zecco Trading currently offers 10 Free Trades every month if you trade at least 25 times or carry a $25,000 balance in your account. This can be a perfect way for day traders to save some money on commissions. Don’t have $25,000 to invest or plan to make 25 trades per month? Don’t worry, commissions are only $4.50 per trade with this broker if you don’t meet the other requirements. Keep in mind that by going with one of these discount brokers, you will be sacrificing service which may be important to some investors.

Refer Your Friends

Some online brokers give you free trades in return for referrals of other investors. For example, SogoTrade will give you 25 free trades for referring a friend who ends up opening up a SogoTrade brokerage account. This is another way to cut costs on commissions and other broker fees which can cut into your profits.

There is no doubt that investors who look online for cheap stocks to buy are saving a lot more money than those who still use traditional brokerage firms. While these traditional brokers usually offer great service and advice, their commissions tend to be quite high. If saving money is your number one goal, then it is better to go with an online discount broker to knock down those fees and maximize your earnings.

The Dow Jones indexes are some of the most popular and oft used indexes for US securities. The most well known Dow Jones index is the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which is calculated using the value of its 30 constituent stocks. Charles Dow, the founder of the Dow Jones & Company, first created the index. In 2010, the Dow Jones & Company sold 90% of stake, and the effective editorial control in the indexes, to the CME group of companies. It is the CME group that is the present editorial owner of the Dow Jones indexes through the company called Dow Jones Indexes.

Getting Dow Jones Real Time Data

Dow Jones realtime data is available for purchase from the Dow Jones Indexes as a paid service. This data can then be displayed and used on internet sites, handheld devices, tickers, television and other electronic services. Depending on your requirements, there are different types of licenses available for the real-time data.

The most popular index is the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), but you can also get real-time data for other indexes. Other indexes include the Dow Jones Transportation Average (DJTA), the Utility Average (DJUA), the Composite Average (DJCA, also known as the Composite), and the Global Titans 50 Index (DJGT50). Under the trademark Dow Jones, the company runs hundreds of other indexes.

For lay traders, there are a number of services that provide real time stock quotes. One such service is Google Finance, which provides real-time data directly from the NYSE. The Dow Jones realtime data is different from the data provided by the NYSE, and as such, Google Finance does not show the Dow Jones realtime data.

Trading Using Dow Jones Realtime Data

High frequency trading refers to security trading done with computer algorithms that shuffle large sums of money in a single trade. High frequency algorithmic trading also last for a relatively short time, many a times just seconds. Realtime Dow Jones index data can tell the traders more about the health of the market at any point during the day. This allows the traders to make better high-frequency trading decisions.

Though Dow Jones indexes cannot be purchased directly through the New York Stock Exchange, there are many Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) which track different Dow Jones indexes. One such fund is the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF. Realtime data allows for better investment decision when buying and selling ETFs too.

You can contact Dow Jones Indexes at RTData-Indexes@djindexes.com to query about buying the Dow Jones realtime data service.

This kind of investment payout is known as dividend stocks. Dividends allow an investor a steady stream of passive income just for investing in a company. Discussed below are reasons why companies pay dividends, the advantages of dividend stocks, and the two ways a company will use their profits.

To gauge how succesful a compnay is many people will look at how much profit the company makes. Dividend payments is one way a company can use their profit. A company could also reinvest profits in their company, a form of dividend payment can be more stocks in a company. Some companies that pay dividends are natural gas stocks.

If a company did not pay dividends what would they do with the profits earned? The company could pay back debts, buy shares back from holders that they feel are undervalued, or just reinvest profits back into the company. What a company does with their profits will show their overall thought process, if the company is pro-growth or pro profit-sharing.

A pro-growth philosophy shows that a company is actively trying to build up their company with their own money. This can be done by paying debts, and buying back shares. These actions will make the company more valuable and its shares. The benifit to the shareholder will come when they sell their shares for a higher profit due to the companies actions.

The pro profit-sharing way of thought shows that a company thinks its share holders own the company and deserve profits. A portion of the companies profits when the company is doing good or not growing at all. The money provided to share holders can be used as a form of income, or as a way to reinvest in the company.

Finding good stocks to invest in can be a very fun process when you know what you are doing. The method for picking one really depends on what kind of investor you are. For instance, if you are a day trader, then you will have to analyze stock charts to take advantage of incremental rises in price.

In this scenario, you would not be looking to make long term money from the company. Instead, your whole goal is to buy and sell within a few hours, and take advantage of small price shifts. Some companies really go overboard, and buy and sell 1000s of shares a day.

However, if you want a good long term stock, then you need to take the same approach you would if you were to buy part of the company itself. Even though you are only buying the stock of a company, the principles are the same as if you were to purchase part of the firm. This is because long term, the market values a company according to how it is performing. Therefore, if the future outlook is good, you can plan on the stock doing well.

For this reason, if you are putting money in a stock for the long term, than you want to analyze their financial statements. Make sure they are profitable, and also have low levels of debt. Some long term investors just base their decision on finding a stock that is lower than their 52 week average. This is not nearly thorough enough.

The company with the best long term prospects is the one you want to go with. You should not even look at the
stock price at first. Instead, you want to look at the company’s past history, and make sure have been profitable, and have low amounts of debt. This indicates they should continue making money for the long haul.

Only once you have found a company like this should you look at the stock price. First, determine the company’s intrinsic value. Unfortunately, this is a fairly complex process, and is out of the scope of this article. There are plenty of great resources that will help you out with this.

Then, subtract out the market capitalization. If the latter number is 70% or less of the intrinsic value, it would be a good investment. That is how to find good stocks to invest in shortly.

Rookie investors in the stock market are concerned about what direction the stock market is going to go. They have watched the volatility of the market from the year 2000. You remember that in the late 1990′s, the word was that it did not matter if a company made a profit, it was the new economy. Well the new economy soon splattered all over the sidewalk and we have been stepping in it ever since then.

During the past decade we have encountered several different booms and busts. Now investors are wondering when it will be safe to enter the waters again. There are several different sentiments about the current situation. An October 8, 2010 article by Conrad de Aenlle as reported in moneywatch.com is all doom and gloom. He states that the insiders are selling their stock and that more people are moving to Treasury funds. He states that the confidence level is currently down and people are still worried.

In another article published the same day in The Guru Investor, the sentiment was all up and rosy. A quote from Warren Buffet stated that now is the best time to enter the stock market while everyone is selling. You certainly do not want to buy stock when everyone is buying because the price would be too high. It would then be time to get out and find a different investment strategy. The author of this article suggested purchasing high dividend paying stocks. This will allow you the opportunity to get into low priced equities and still have the investment return advantage over Treasury funds returns.

I certainly feel that the best time to purchase equities is when everyone else is selling them. Those investors who are willing to take a little risk and trade stocks when the market is down stand the best opportunity to make money in the stock market. The chicken littles of the world simply play it safe and then wonder why they do not have any money. So take the opportunity today to find the great opportunities that still exist in the stock market and make an investment. Of course, the art of stock picking is certainly another story. You should also be wise in the type of stocks you purchase. After all stocks can go down. Being able to wait out the ripple that we are still in for should prove opportune for you in the long run.

The stock market is an everyday term used to describe a place where stock in companies is bought and sold, issues stock to finance new equipment, buy other companies, expand their business, introduce new products and services. The investors who buy this stock now own a share of the company and if the company does well the price of their stock increases, if it does not do well the stock price decreases.

Beginning traders often fantasize or wonder about how some people are able to achieve tremendous profits by trading stocks on a daily or weekly basis. Going farther than the hype & the bells and whistles that a lot of the so-called “trading gurus” like to invoke, the real “secrets” of the stock market game are enclosed within the trading set ups and market signals you rely on to decide how to choose stocks, when to buy and when to sell them, or even when to short sell those that are poised for a profitable fall.

The clearer your set ups are, the faster you can spot a potentially profitable trading scenario that can reduce your risk. Complicated technical systems and information overload can make you slow and confuse you right from the start. It makes you lose money instead of making your profits grow. You can be sure that the trading method you employ to approach the stock market and pick stocks can make a big difference. To succeed you will need to focus on a set of simple trading strategies that you can implement without hesitation.

Some sites on the web do offer more effective and updated day trading methodologies, one of those sites that can show you how to take advantage of certain stocks on positive and negative momentum, they focus on momentum stock trading strategies that are practical and easier to apply than many other technical systems out there.

Stock trading doesn’t have to be complicated as many people perceive, but you do need to follow a well organized set of rules and tactics. Once you master them, you can aspire to replicate profitable trades with consistency.

Online brokers are offering better features today, even as fierce competition leads them to charge less than ever before. More sophisticated software-based trading tools are emerging as an alternative to traditional Web site transactions.

Recently there has been a dramatic increase in the tools made available to average traders. Without the latest technology, brokers with browser-based platforms may not be the preferred choice anymore.

Advanced trading methods warrant the use of powerful trading software. For example, investors may want to implement “trailing stop” orders, which allow them to set limits on the maximum possible loss without setting a limit on the maximum possible gain. This removes the need for an investor to monitor the investment on an ongoing basis.

Stock trading software has clear advantages over browser-based trading. RushTrade’s Direct Plus software-based trading platform, for example, provides real-time market data and many features that allow strategic control of a portfolio.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing features of the software is the ability to create and automate “trade strategies.” Using RushTrade’s software, you could create a long strategy specifying the price you want to receive and the market conditions that must be met before your order is placed. You can also specify market conditions that will cause the strategy to be automatically cancelled. Trade Strategies is one of the most efficient ways to strategically control your trades and manage your risk.

Another benefit of software like Direct Plus is that most of the information can be displayed on one page and is fully customizable to suit the monitor size. Unlike a browser-based platform, it is not necessary to repeatedly refresh your screen to update the data or switch back and forth between pages. Software-based trading platforms allow you to see all of the information at once. Direct Plus actually supports more than one monitor for an expanded layout.

Software-based trading platforms, such as DirectPlus, are easy to use, load quickly and can display multiple windows of information at one time. This kind of software allows an investor to monitor quotes, charts, order execution, news, alerts and more, all at the same time.

Trading software is the next step for online investors. The Internet brought many casual investors to the stock market. Now, software applications like RushTrade’s Direct Plus usher in a new era for online investing software.
