If you are running your own debt elimination plan you may know how hard it is to stay on track towards your goals. In this article I’m going to cover some of the common pitfalls to running your own debt plan.
No Coach to Guide You
One of the biggest problems running your own debt elimination plan is the fact that everything is riding on you. If you make a mistake it’s nobody else’s fault but your own.
This also means you will have to take more responsibility to learn more about your finances by reading more book and articles on the subject. This obviously presents a few challenges if this is all new to you.
However, it’s also important to know that if you do get in way over your head that it is OK to ask for help. This doesn’t mean your are a failure in anyone’s eyes . Like most people it’s fine if you get stuck but don’t hide from the fact that you might need help.
You Need Track Results
Next, you need to track your results. Without tracking your results you’ll have no idea what is the working and what isn’t. For example when I worked in financial services I would often ask clients if they had a debt plan in place and were tracking the results?
The common answer was they had a plan in place but didn’t track anything. Tracking your results is the only way you will be able to measure your goal and if you are on the right track in the first place.
Change Your Habits
The final mistake is probably the hardest to correct. The reality is no debt elimination plan is good unless you can change your financial habits. These bad habits are the reason you got in debt in the first place and without changing them you are destine to repeat your financial misfortune again.
If this seems hard to commit to you may have to look at other debt relief options that will give you the added benefit of a coach like debt counseling.
In the end it all comes down to how well you can execute your plan and stay on top of it. This will take some time to happen but the results will be well worth the effort.
