Getting Cheap Short Term Car Insurance

by J. Hamilton Fraser on March 26, 2010

There are many reasons why one would need and want to secure cheap short term car insurance. In this post we will outline some of those basic needs, and explain why this type of insurance has become so popular in the UK, and why it is starting to become more popular in the state.

First, not everyone needs car insurance for the entire year–yet basically every traditional auto policy defaults to this timeframe for coverage options. Everyone pays their yearly premiums (even if they do so on a month to month basis), many without thinking if they really need coverage for the whole year. Take for example millions of people who live in New York City. How many take the subway each and everyday, and then a few times a year will take a road trip? Is there really a reason to have full coverage for 12 months when you only use your car for maybe 2 months out of the year? Probably not, which is one reason why short term car insurance has been growing in popularity.

Another reason why short term insurance could be a good idea is if your son or your daughter (or both I guess) go away to college for nine months out of the year and only drive when they come home for a short period of time. Why pay for insurance that you don’t need? Simply put, that wouldn’t make sense, as long as you could find a good, cheaper alternative…which you can do.

Short term auto insurance really can be of benefit to many people, as long as they make sure the cost savings make sense. Obviously, this insurance will cost more on a per day or per month basis than regular long-term insurance, but it still can make economic sense if you really only need it on a temporary basis.
