Interested in trading the natural gas market? Here is an easy way to invest in this sector. This article will discuss the Natural Gas ETF.

What exactly is an ETF? ETF is an acronym for exchange-traded fund. An ETF gives you ownership in a basket of assets or securities. Depending on the ETF, it could be made of stocks in a given sector. Using the example of a natural gas ETF, it could be made up of natural gas stocks of companies that explore for gas. Another ETF may be made up of companies that distribute natural gas.

The value of the ETF will be determined by the stocks, commodities and assets of that ETF.

You may be asking yourself why not trade  natural gas mutual funds? There are many mutual funds out there, but ETFs have several advantages over mutual funds. An ETF trades constantly through the trading day. ETFs are bought and sold through out the day and prices may fluctuate moment-to-moment depending on the demand for that particular ETF.

Mutual funds on the other hand, are only priced at the end of the day after the market has closed. That means if a bullish news item came out during the day about natural gas, if you traded an ETF, you can act immediately to catch the price move. If you elect to trade a mutual fund, you would have to wait until the end of the day to buy and get your price. You’re likely to miss a lot of the move if you do that!

A natural gas ETF can be traded like a stock. You can enter market orders, limit order and stop loss orders. You may also trade them on margin, and some ETFs have options that you can trade too,

Mutual funds don’t allow you that flexibility to trade.

Another advantage is that there isn’t a minimum to purchase an ETF. You could purchase 1 ETF a time, as opposed to a minimum purchase of $1,000 or more that most mutual funds have.

There are several ways to trade natural gas ETFS. There is an ETF that invest in the natural gas futures market. This is a pure play on the direction of natural gas prices. This is an unleveraged fund, so you won’t need to worry about margin calls.

There are gas ETFs that invest in different parts of the natural gas supply chain. There are also ETFS that invest in drillers, pipeline operators and storage.
