Learning About The Stock Market

by J. Hamilton Fraser on September 5, 2010

Who couldn’t use more knowledge about the stock market? I’ve been trading stocks for many years and I still search for more information to help better my gains and to reduce my losses. There are many stock market courses that investors and traders can take, but are they worth the time and money to actually take them?

Most of the time that I spend learning about the stock market is reading book. I tend to stay away from websites because I’ve seen some that their information is not 100% correct or clear. I will say that I do belong to one stock market forum because the members are also investors and traders. It’s there that I get most of my “tips” for stock or sectors I’m looking to invest in. Just because I get some ideas from these forums doesn’t mean that I will automatically buy shares in those companies. I always do my own research into every investment I make.

I’ve learned over the years to only trust my own research. In the beginning I would take the word of another trader only to get burned by the stock. Remember that there are investor and traders out there that will hype up a particular stock so they will make a killing on the trade. the problem is that new investors get stuck hold the stock as it plunges back to the levels it was at before the hype. This type of scam is called the “Pump and Dump”. Many penny stock websites are known for doing this and you should stay away from these sites.

Look into doing your own research by reading the company’s financial reports, balance sheets as well as listening to their conference calls after they release their quarterly reports. That is the only way to be sure of the company you are going to invest in.
