Refinancing Your Car With A Bad Credit Score

by J. Hamilton Fraser on April 1, 2010

If you have been scratching your head wondering how to refinance an auto loan with bad credit then there are some things you should be aware of.  Although interest rates are very low in general these days, if you have bad credit you will more than likely end up paying more.

It’s a shame that those with bad credit are penalized in this way but ultimately lenders are just wanting to make the most amount of money that they can and if you pose a higher financial risk they want to make sure the rewards warrant the risk.  If you really want to get the best deal that you can you might want to actually consider rebuilding your credit so that it’s no longer bad.  Even if you only manage to boost it to fair it’s still better for you.

It’s generally accepted that applying for your credit reports is the best place to start.  The easiest way is to fill in an online form found at annualcreditreport.com.  If you look through everything and see some mistakes then when the mistakes are corrected your score could go up.  It might not but it’s still a good idea to try.  Perhaps you paid off a debt but it’s still showing as outstanding.  Well, pointing this fact out can help you.

Building your credit score can take quite a lot of time, despite the fact that there are companies claiming to repair your credit score overnight.  This is not possible and is probably just a scam.  So if you really want to refinance your car and you don’t want to wait for your credit score to improve there really isn’t anything that you can do other than shop around for the best deal.  Many websites out there offer the ability to compare quotes from a number of sources.  Another option is to find someone to act as a co-signer.  They will need to have a good credit history of course so bear that in mind.
