RV Insurance Rates

by Leo Sardina on December 11, 2009

RV insurance rates greatly vary according according to the state the RV is registered and sometimes even residence. There are many undisclosed factors that determine insurance rates and each should be considered before purchasing a policy for you RV. Buying an rv is a big investment; you want to go in with a good understanding of the peripheral costs, don’t you? Here are the factors to consider in understanding what your insurance payments will be:

1. Storage location. Location is determined by state as well as zip code. One example is if your RV is stored in Florida during hurricane season, there is higher risk for damage than if it was stored in Arkansas at the same time. The higher the risk, the higher the rate may be.

2. Type of Use. Use of an RV is considered either recreational or full-time. If you live in your RV full time, you need a policy that follows you everywhere you travel. If you simply travel on the weekend, you will need less of a policy.

3. Type of RV. With some companies, a class A RV is more expensive than Class C. It may be a good idea to research cost of insurance before choosing the type of RV you purchase.

4. Previous RV ownership. Having owned an RV before may qualify you for discounts.

5. RV association membership. This type of membership can sometimes earn you a discount on your rates. This is usually advertised in brochures and websites of your RV association.

6. Having multiple insurance policies. Having more than one policy with the same company qualifies you for a multiple-discount.

7. Deductible. Having a higher deductible will provide you with lower rates. Make sure you know how much you can afford out-of-pocket before choosing a deductible.

8. Age. Sometimes insurance companies give discounts to older drivers.

9. Driving history. A discount may be given if you have a clean driving record, clear of claims and accidents.

Insurance can be one of those hidden costs you don’t think about when you’re going to make a major purchase, and if you don’t get the best deal possible you end up with less discretionary income to use on your cool RV vacations. So whether it’s for your RV or you’re looking for cheap car liability insurance, keep hunting until you get the deal you want and need.
