financial aid

I was in school (higher education) for almost 7 years and each of those years I had the fun task of applying for student financial aid. By the end of my schooling, I was a pro at filling out the paperwork and knowing what to expect!

Just like most students who have to apply for some form of financial aid or grants for moms, I was not offered anything the first time I applied and I had to appeal. Actually, as the years went on, it became harder and harder to get anything at all.

The thing I didn’t know and had to learn is that many students get turned down the first time and it seems like it is the way they figure out who really needs the money and who is serious about getting it. If you appeal your rejection then you must really need it.

The appeal I submitted was comprised of several paragraphs where I went on about how it is everyone’s dream to go to college and get an education. It was my dream as well and without financial aid, I would not be able to attend. I would add that money alone should not be the determining factor whether a good student is allowed to continue on with their education.

I also added that my parents were unable to pay any part of my college expenses and with my dental and medical bills, no aid meant my having to give up my quest for a degree in higher education.

Every year I appealed in that manner, I did get some student loans but the amounts did vary. It is important to not give up if you are rejected the first time and go through the appeal process just like I was successful in doing. You might be trying to find Obama school grants or loans this year and it is something that you may need to give all your effort to. If you do get rejected, try again because it might be their way of weeding out all the students who really don’t need it or are not serious about going to college.
