Understanding Stock Market Trading

by J. Hamilton Fraser on January 19, 2010

The stock market is a complicated area for a person to engage with, but also it is a place where stocks, shares or derivatives of a company are bought or sold. In a short word Stock market usually refers to a place where the trading of certain stocks of a company will take place.  Purchasers and Sellers work to come up with an agreed upon price.  If the participants cannot come up with a price for which the potential buyer is willing to buy shares in the company, then no transaction occurs.   Sometimes the stock is referred to as equities and it makes the market known as the equity market.

Stocks and shares are words that are interchangeable but these two terms are different in some of their context. Stock is referred to as the ownership certificate of a company.  Shares mean the ownership certificates of any particular company.  There are both common and preferred shares of stock.  Common stock is the most prevalent stock that is sold on the open market.

If you own a share of common stock in a company it will make you the partial owner of the company and it will give you the voting rights to that company issues. However, stocks do not offer guarantees of returns. Although, stocks can generate revenue through their dividend even if the price of the stock goes down. It only means if a company offers a dividend in addition to the appreciation of its shares, you are then guaranteed of a return on that share that you own.

These are simple facts that you should know, before you dive in to the stock market industry or business. You should also know what type of stock that you should invest in. This is important because in the future your will be assured that your money does not go in to waste.
